On May 2, 2026, the community of La Mora in Suchitoto, El Salvador, said goodbye to one of its most dedicated leaders. Armando Alas, known affectionately to everyone as Kike, passed away, leaving behind a profound legacy of leadership, resilience, and friendship. In his passing, the CoCoDA and CRC families have lost not just a collaborator, but a dear friend.

A Life Dedicated to Community
Kike was an invaluable contributor of the collaborative efforts between Companion Community Development Alternatives (CoCoDA) and the Committee for the Reconstruction of the Communities (CRC). As a historic member of CRC, he dedicated his life to the reconstruction and development of his community.
The Face of Hospitality
For many North American delegates, Kike was their first impression of El Salvador. He often served as the delegation’s driver, transporting the delegates through long bumpy roads to the heart of each community in Suchitoto. His hospitality had no limits. He and his partner Félix—a formidable leader in her own right—frequently opened their home to visitors.
A Master Storyteller
Kike didn’t just tell stories; he performed them. With an amazing voice, magnetic charisma, and the timing of a great actor, he had the power to transport his listeners. Whether he was sitting and driving the truck or in front of the dinner table, Kike became the door to the stories of his country.
He was an open book, sharing the tragedies and epics of the Civil War. He spoke of the nightmares of joining the conflict as a child, but also of the dreams that kept him moving forward.

A Legacy of Solidarity
Kike’s greatest contribution was his understanding of the work of CoCoDA and CRC as a bridge-builder. He often reflected on the internal struggle he faced when he first began working with North Americans. Having lived through a war where the U.S. government funded the military against his people, his trust was hard-earned.However, Kike reached a profound realization that he shared with every group: “The U.S. Government is not the same as the U.S. People.” Through the solidarity of CoCoDA supporters, he saw a different side of the U.S. —one committed to justice and peace.
Honoring His Journey
Kike’s dream was simple: to see his community thrive. To honor that dream and the man who carried it, we are sharing a series of videos that offer a glimpse into his life, his voice, and the indelible mark he left on all of us.
Rest in power, Kike. Your stories will continue to be told.
