Education

Education - CoCoDA

In CoCoDA, in collaboration with our partners, seeks to create longitudinal programs that support education from pre-school to university.

  • Our projects are identified, designed, and managed by our partner communities.
  • We support local elementary and secondary education that intentionally prepares for and works toward university attendance.
  • We do not provide educational loans. Instead, we ask our scholars to provide leadership and education to others during and after their university education.
  • Many of our scholars return to their home villages to be leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, doctors, nurses, etc.

We work closely with governmental educational systems where possible, but also support community educators where educational opportunities are scarce.

Through ongoing work by CoCoDA, partnering with other local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations like DKA Austria and the local government, educational participation is on the rise and university attendance is significantly higher than the national average in the communities with whom we partner.

Presently, only about 1% of Central Americans attend university. Elementary and secondary education, although nationally mandated, is still difficult to access, especially in the countryside. Most schools can only provide classes for 4 hours a day. This lack of education creates a cycle of poverty, encourages illegal immigration and funnels many young people into gang activity.

Over the past twenty years, CoCoDA has worked with local NGOs and villagers to support a variety of educational initiatives. We’ve assisted with the rebuilding of schools, training of community educators, providing of educational supplies, creating of computer labs, establishing anti-gang programs and developing university scholarship programs.
