Seventeen students from Centre College, Kentucky visited Santa Marta, Cabañas and Masatepeque in Suchitoto in a course of study and service learning.
During sixteen days, Centre College students were part of the two communities, living in homestays and working side by side while learning the culture, the history and lifestyles of the local people.
In Santa Marta, the students visited CoCoSI (a HIV/AIDS prevention organization), Sueños de Madera (a woodworking cooperative) and the Organic Farming Cooperative of the Santa Marta community. At each location, they heard and saw how these organizations address economic and social issues in the community. They also worked with the locals on creating handicrafts and growing organic vegetables and foods.
After the visit to Santa Marta, the delegation traveled to the community of Masatepeque in Suchitoto where they worked alongside the people from that community in expanding the community health clinic which provides services to the sixty-eight families that make up the community.
At the end of the trip, delegates had a day to relax at San Blas beach where they had the opportunity to release baby turtles and enjoy the beauty of Salvadoran beaches and landscapes.
This was the first delegation from Centre College, but they are already making plans to return in 2022.
